Book Description
After the conquest of the North and South Poles and before man landed on the moon, the peak of Everest was one of the most alluring dreams of explorers and mountain climbers. Until the early 1950's, the last great mystery of the Earth, hidden in the rarefied atmosphere of the highest altitudes, was magnificent, one-of-a-kind challenge, more enticing than the call of any other mountain. Even today, many years after the first ascent by Hillary and Tenzing, this imposing pyramid between Nepal and Tibet is right, countless expeditions of every type and size assault its slopes. This book traces the climbing history of the highest mountain in the world, identified as such only in 1852 through the trigonometric calculations of the Survey of India. Since then it has become a legend. After it took first place in height - 8840 meters at the time of its first measurement, using mathematics and trigonometry - Everest remained a simple geographic curiosity until the first expeditions of the 1920's.
Extraordinary photographs and detailed writings record those climbs and evoke the repeated attempts that finally resulted in Edmund Hillary's and Tenzing Norgay's conquest of the peak from the Nepalese side, on May 29, 1953. From that time on, rather than fading, Everest's mountaineering history began an extraordinary acceleration that has increased over time.
Season after season, climbers of every nationality have conquered the various crests and all the other slopes, ever the most difficult ones, in some cases without the use of oxygen tanks. Almost 700 climbers have scaled the peak of the highest mountain on Earth, most of them along normal routes. This legion of challengers, armed with picks and crampons, grows inexorably year by year
